The Details

Quilting charges based on a per square inch price are calculated by multiplying the dimensions of your quilt in inches (Length X Width) by the price. For example, a quilt top that is 60" x 80", has a total of 4,800 square inches and for a edge-to-edge quilting design that costs $0.025/sq in, the total cost for the quilting is $120. (60 x 80 = 4800 and 4800 x 0.025 = 120)

The square inch price for quilting designs and services will vary based on the density and intricacy of the quilting design chosen.

The minimum quilting service charge is $60, so a small quilt's square inch price will be rounded up to the minimum charge of $60. This is to take into account the time to load and set up a quilt on the longarm frame.

Thread
Elli Quilts uses OMNI and OMNI-V threads from Superior Threads for the top thread and a matching color, if available, from the Bottom Line collection from Superior Threads in the bobbin.
OMNI and OMNI-V are 40 wt. poly-wrapped poly core threads with a subtle matte finish and are a go to favorite for longarm quilting.
Bottom Line threads are 2 ply lint-free filament polyester thread, suitable for any type of sewing. This strong, yet lightweight thread is the ultimate in bobbin thread.
These threads are included in your quilting square inch price. If you would like to use another type of thread, you may either provide it or Elli can source specialty threads for a thread upcharge.
Batting Options

You are welcome to provide your own batting or purchase from our stock of batting options. Elli Quilts carries a variety of Quilters Dream brand battings in 100% cotton, 80/20 blend, and wool. We also have the economical, yet reliably consistent and decent batting of Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 blend.

I will order other varieties of Quilters Dream battings if given enough lead time.

We can double up on batting in your quilt, just let us know when we discuss your project. Sometimes a cotton plus a wool batting is the perfect combo to get warmth, nice drape, and that beautiful "poof" in the quilting.

Finishing Options

Quilts are not trimmed once finished quilting unless requested. There is a $15 charge for trimming your quilt. If you choose to have it trimmed, you will still receive any of your leftover backing or batting.

Elli offers machine binding service as an optional add-on to your quilting service. Binding is charged by the linear inch of the circumference of your quilt and,  assuming a rectangular shaped quilt with straight edges, the pricing is as follows:

  • Make Binding - $0.05/in – You supply the fabric (or we can use leftover backing fabric) and Elli will cut, sew and press your binding so that it is ready to attach to your quilt.

  • Attach Binding to Top - $0.17/in – Elli will trim and attach your provided binding to your quilt top by machine.  This doesn’t include making the binding strips and the binding will need to be finished.

  • Attach Binding and Machine Finish - $0.30 – I will trim your quilt top, attach the binding, and finish it by machine.  This doesn't include making the binding strips. Your quilt will be returned totally finished!

Prepare Your Quilt Top & Backing for Longarming

Please read through these instructions on preparing your quilt top and backing before sending them to Elli Quilts to ensure the best possible results on your quilt and avoid possible extra charges.

  • Batting and Backing Size: Ensure Batting and Backing are at least 8 inches wider and 8 inches longer than your quilt top. For example, for a quilt top of 60 x 80 inches, use batting and backing sized 68 x 88 inches to allow attachment to the longarm frame. As an optional service, Elli can sew your backing fabric together to the correct size for you for a charge of $15 per seam.

  • Prepare Your Top and Backing: Both quilt top and backing must be pressed and free of stray threads. It is advisable to sew around the edges of your quilt top about 1/8 inch away from the edges to prevent seams from opening during loading on the frame and quilting.

  • Avoid Selvages: Backing fabric should not contain selvages in the seams, as they can cause bumps and puckers. Selvages on outer edges are acceptable and preferred to remain intact.

  • Remove Pins and Embellishments: Remove all pins and non-stitchable embellishments before submitting your quilt.

  • Straight Edges and Corners: Backing fabric must have straight edges on all sides, and all four corners should be 90-degree angles.

  • Directional Quilts: If your quilt top or backing is directional, mark the top with a safety-pinned note.

  • How do I choose the right quilting design for my project?
We work closely with our clients to understand their vision for their quilt and offer guidance in selecting the perfect quilting design to complement their quilt top. Whether you prefer something traditional or contemporary, we have a variety of designs to choose from and we will help you find the right one.
  • Where do I send my quilt top to you for quilting?
Please ship your quilt top and, if not purchasing from us, your backing and batting to: Elli Quilts 3308 El Camino Ave #300 PMB #131 Sacramento, CA 95821 We recommend using a tracked shipping method and ensuring that your quilt is securely packaged to prevent any damage or loss during transit. This is a safe shipping address where your quilt will never sit outside unsecured. You can rest assured that we have never lost a quilt in shipping.
  • What if I have specific questions not covered here?

  • What if I want a quilting design that you do not have?
If there's a particular quilting pattern you have your heart set on, we're happy to purchase it for you. Typically, we'll share the cost unless it's something we know we'll use again, in which case there's no charge to you.
  • What is longarm quilting?
Longarm quilting is a specialized technique where a large sewing machine with an extended arm is used to quilt layers of fabric together. The fabric and batting is attached to a frame while the machine moves over the quilt, guided either manually or by computer-programmed gears and bands. This allows for larger quilting designs and faster completion of quilting projects compared to traditional quilting methods. Longarm quilting offers several advantages, including faster completion times, the ability to create intricate quilting designs, and the professional finish it provides to quilts.
  • What is your turnaround time for quilting services?
Our turnaround time is under 2 weeks for edge-to-edge quilting from when we receive your quilt! Contact Elli to get a current estimate on the turnaround time; it could be much quicker!
  • What quilting services do you offer?
At Elli Quilts, we offer a range of longarm quilting services, including edge-to-edge quilting, custom quilting: either freehand or computerized designs, and basting services for those who prefer to hand-quilt their projects. We can also create a fully commissioned quilt according to your vision.
  • What is your pricing?
Edge-to-edge quilting starts at 2.5 cents per square inch, some patterns cost slightly more due to the density of the quilting. There are optional extra products and services such as trimming and binding or buying batting or backing fabric from us. You can get the exact price for edge-to-edge quilting on your quilt top with our order form. Custom freehand or computerized quilting starts at 5 cents per square inch and is based on the complexity of the designs chosen and thread color changes. Commissioned quilt charges are based on a $30 hourly rate plus materials. There is a minimum charge of $60 per project.
  • How do I prepare my quilt for longarm quilting?
Before sending your quilt to be longarm quilted, ensure that the quilt top and backing is pressed and free from any loose threads or debris. The batting and backing fabric must be a minimum of 8 inches longer and 8 inches wider than your quilt top. The extra is required to allow the needed space to attach the quilt to the longarm frame. If it is not large enough, there may be an additional charge for the extra work needed to attach the quilt to the frame or we may not be able to finish your quilt with that backing at all. If your quilt top or backing has a specific direction, mark the top with a safety pinned note to indicate which way is up.
  • Is shipping included?
